Oamaru Stone History

Calciferous shells of marine animals and plants formed a limey seabed sediment. This sediment then ages for over 40 million years. Further aging can turn it into marble. The stone has an infinite combination of colour and texture, a gift to both the sculptor and the viewer. It can be used indoors and outdoors as desired.

Parkside Quarry

There are three major quarries in the world which yield high quality limestone deposits. The Oamaru stone deposit in New Zeland has been declared the finest limestone in the world, along with Caen stone in France, and USA by geologists.
Oamaru limestone is hewn from the rolling green hills of North Otago, outside Oamaru, New Zealand. The Parkside Stone Quarry has produced stone since 1906, with other Quarries operating in the area as early as 1862.
Oamaru stone is natural, so it's an easy mixer ~ blending well with other materials. It can be easily worked on site by stonemasons, making it particularly valuable for arches and freedom work.
With Oamaru Limestone, harmony doesn't need to be contrived, it flows naturally.
Oamaru Limestone is as popular with architects today as it was a century ago. Their enthusiasm for using the stone has survived the test of time as has the enduring colour and texture of the stone itself.
